Weakley County, Tennessee – Capt. R.J. Dew – 9th TN Infantry (Confederate Veteran ) – 1865

The effort to record Civil War veterans’ experiences, during the conflict and before and after it, started in 1914. Dr. Gus Dyer, Tennessee State Archivist, developed a questionnaire and contacted all known living Tennessee Civil War veterans, asking them to return the questionnaires to Nashville.

This is the questionnaire filled out by Captain Robert Josephus Dew of Weakley County Tennessee after returning home from the Civil War.

Captain Robert Josephus Dew joined the Weakley County Tennessee volunteers, “Old Hickory Blues,” in May of 1861 at the age of eighteen. In his questionnaire, he reports: “owned no property, a horse, bridle, and saddle was all that I claimed as my own.
